Organization - grade 6-12

Still thinking...

Searching the aisles of school supplies for the perfect organizer, folder, binder and it hits me. A binder flopped right out in front of my cart and a beam of light flooded aisle 4 (cue hallelujah chorus).

No, that didn’t happen...

however...

The key to organization at this age is really knowing your students (or child). One size does not fit all nor does one method.  😐

Even the best plan in the Marie Kondo (love her by the way) world won’t work if it doesn’t fit. If you have worked with students with exceptionalities for any length of time you know the need to do things the way that makes sense to them. Which is really true for most. It may seem like a jumbled mess to others but beautiful chaos to them. In every stage, our job as educators and parents is to foster independence . Let me say that again, even for students with assigned aides or attendants, independence is the goal and organizational skills are the tools.

The beauty in the chaos is as we guide in developing organizational skills we must
set aside any preconceived ideas of what we think will work and simply get
to know our students. Observe them, watch them work, discover how they think..

THE GREAT DIVIDE

In the inclusive environment,
you may find requirements such as specific colored notebooks or folders. Binders with divider tabs are also common in these grade levels. One rule of thumb I tend to favor is divide and conquer.

First, divide the schedule to am/pm or before lunch after lunch, you get the point. Tackle
the morning first. One method is to color coordinate. For example, keep the morning notebooks and binders all the same one or two color. Do the same with the afternoon. Create a key chart to display in a locker or student agenda so there is no guessing as to what they need for morning and afternoon. (Yellow/orange= morning ) Take it a step further and rubber band or use a large clip to bind the sections together. Another method that I have found effective is the use of cinch bags. This would depend on school policy but some schools do allow the use of cinch bags instead of book bags. One for morning and one for afternoon. I recommend copying this method for supplies.
Create a pencil pouch for both morning and afternoon. Divide and duplicate.

I hope you find these methods to be helpful.
Be patient and best wishes in this school year.
