Margin of Error

I sat in a meeting of a little over 500 department of education staff this week listening to our Deputy Superintendent speak about the strategic plan for my state's education program. The word "reset" stood out to me as he spoke. I actually got so preoccupied with this term I remember little about the next 3 hours.

Meetings are a must, planning is a must.  Yet even in the most finely tuned plan.....there is room for error. The margin of error to be precise. Regardless of the meticulous lengths in the planning process, the margin of error still exists.

I love data. I think I’ve mentioned that before. This margin got me thinking 🤔. If even the most well thought out plan has a margin of error....what’s the point? Is it all chance? And what is the likelihood the path I chose is correct?

When I looked up the phrase it is described as “the amount allowed for in case of miscalculation or change of circumstance”.  So, when I break that down in my brain, the planning, the preparation, the reviewing means that even when we do our very best we will always run the risk of failure.

No guarantee.

No fool proof plan.

So, if the margin represents error than what does the rest of the number mean? The large portion?

The rest of that number my friend, is the growth, the rest of that number charts where we started and where we went in that span of time. The rest of that number must mean success.

So it’s reset time, the beginning ...again. Maybe for you it is a continuation of an ongoing work . Or maybe it is a start over that did not work situation. Whatever the case, move forward with confidence. Confidence that as you work - the margin of error lessons and your successes increase.
